We are just about 5 weeks away from the 10th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Tampa Bay USA! The hotels are getting close to filled, but there are still rooms overlooking the race course.

The Westin Harbour Island is the only hotel that has views of the entire race course from its rooms. True to Westin style and ambiance, this hotel will be sure to impress, at a great price!
Double Double rooms, and King-bedded rooms are available for $149 with breakfast included. This rate allows for up to 4 persons (2 beds) per room, with no additional fees.
Not only do the rooms overlook the race course, but so does the POOL! Just a 2 block walk (4 minutes) from the Athletes Village (Tampa Convention Center), you can be back at your hotel room, showered and watching the rest of the day’s races, resting before dinner!
First a reminder that Confirmed Entries for the World Champs in Tampa were due in by 27 May 11 but this is not the final date for entries, as that date is 27 June 11. Receiving your Confirmed Entries now helps us to start sorting out the Race Programme and gives us a good idea of the total number of likely participants.
Whilst on the subject of entries I would like to draw your attention to some of the possible Small Boat Entries that you can still make, even when you are bringing Standard Boat Crews to Tampa, especially in some of the developing Competition Classes.
For example, in the Junior Division, if you are bringing a Boy’s Crew but do not have enough Girl’s for a Standard Crew or even a Mixed Crew, you could still enter the Small Boat Mixed races, if you have just 4 Junior Girls. This way you can encourage more Girls to compete in the future and help to develop Small Boat Racing at the same time.
A similar situation can be the case with the U23s and here you also have the flexibility of including a few Junior paddlers in your U23s crews, for both the Standard and Small Boat Championships, if you are short of paddlers in the 18-23 age group,
In the Senior Division, it is quite possible that the same situation as the Juniors could arise and you have the added possibility of having within your Senior A crews, enough over 50s, to make up a Small Boat Senior B Mixed crew. Again this can involve more women in our sport and help to develop a new competition.
In the Premier Division, again if you are not entering a Women’s, or Mixed Standard Boat, you can always enter both a Women’s crew (12 women) and/or a Mixed Crew in the Small Boat Championships. Same of course for the Seniors, U23s and Juniors.
Finally, to encourage entries in the Small Boats we may even consider entries from Teams already sending Standard Boat Crews in some of the Small Boat classes, providing that none of the paddlers concerned are already in a Standard Boat Crew – that of course means bringing extra paddlers to enjoy the experience of racing in a World Championships !!
So plenty to think about and lots of options when you ‘think small boat’.
Returning to the entry system, a note on how it all works for those Teams new to our Sport and for Team Managers both new and old too.
For an IDBF World Championship Regatta there are four (4) types of Entry Forms for use at different stages in the entry process namely, Provisional Entry, Confirmed Entry, Final Named Entry, Deferred Entry and Late Entry.
1. A Provisional Entry is sent in at least 6 months before an IDBF Championship to indicate to the Organising Committee that a Team or Club Crew intends to enter the event. (Info Bul 1)
2. A Confirmed Entry is sent in at least 3 months before a Championship to indicate to the Organising Committee that a Team or Club Crew will enter the event. (Info Bul 2)
3. A Final Named Entry is sent to the IDBF a maximum of 6 weeks before a Championship and includes the Names and details of all the participants attending the Championship. (Info Bul 3)
4. A Deferred Entry can be sent to the IDBF instead of the Final Named Entry, when the list of participants cannot yet be finalized or the full funding for the participants has yet to be confirmed. Such an Entry will ensure that the crews concerned are shown in the Race Programme for the Competition Classes they have entered and will not attract a Late Entry Fee.
5. A Late Entry is one received by the IDBF after the closing date for the Final Entry and up to two (2) weeks before an event, when a Deferred Entry has NOT be submitted. Provided that the Race Programme can accommodate such an entry, a Late Entry will only be accepted at the discretion of the IDBF Championship’s Chief Official and will attract a Late Entry Fee.
Hope that all helps you with making your entries for Tampa 2011 and I look forward to seeing your Team competing there.
Yours in sport,
Mike Haslam
IDBF Executive President
