TAMPA, FL – The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute and 2011 World Championship LLC are proud to announce the hosting of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Championship Test Event on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010.

This event will be held on the Seddon Channel Race Course, between Harbour Island and Davis Islands near downtown Tampa, and officials from the IDBF will attend the test event to evaluate the host committee’s progress in preparation for the 10th IDBF World Championship.

The Seddon Channel Race Course will be home to the 10th World Championship, scheduled for Aug. 1-7, 2011, and has been used for many rowing regattas, including the prestigious University of Tampa President’s Cup.

The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute has also been running an annual dragon boat race since 2004, making Tampa one of the most successful dragon boat cities in North America. The October IDBF Test Event will now serve as the ultimate testing ground!

“We are really excited to get the ball rolling for the 2011 World Championships and are eager to get the local community engaged in a number of ways.  The Championship has the ability to bring in close to as many athletes as the Olympic Games and is such great exposure for Tampa,” said Christine Canevari, executive director of the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute.

2011 World Championship LLC and the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute are inviting all corporate, club and community teams, along with the greater paddling community, to be part of this event. Additionally, members of Team USA and Team Canada are expected to attend!

There will be 500m and 200m racing to display the use of the race course and held start docks at different distances. The team entry fee is $500 and discounted hotel rates will be available.  Additionally, the United States Dragon Boat Federation’s Annual General Meeting will be hosted on Friday, Oct. 22 and Sunday, Oct. 24 in conjunction with the test event.

TAMPA, FL – On Aug. 22, eleven Tampa residents will be heading to Prague, Czech Republic to represent the Tampa Bay area and the USA at the 9th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championship!

Team Tampa Bay consists of Tampa Bay & Company President and CEO Paul Catoe and National Sports Manager Terri Parnell, as well as Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute Christine Canevari and Championship Director of the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute Kevin Burns, among others.

Additionally, three attendees are paddlers who qualified for Team USA!  Phil Barringer and Dan Harris, of TECO Energy, and Pam Korotky, of the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Club, have each earned a spot paddling for Team USA in Prague.

While the paddlers are racing, the other eight travelers will be promoting the 10th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championship, scheduled to take place in Tampa in August 2011.  This contingent will be busy making a presentation to the International Congress, hosting a reception for team leaders and spending time at the regatta course learning all the “ins and outs” of running a World Championship!

The bid for Tampa to host the Championship in 2011 was won in 2007 when a group traveled to Sydney, Australia for the 8th IDBF World Championship.  Tampa chose to bid for the 2011 championship after running the most successful National Championship to date in 2006.

President of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) Mike Haslam attended the Championship in 2006 and strongly recommended that Tampa enter their bid based on what he saw.  With the help of the United States Dragon Boat Federation and Tampa Bay & Company, the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute put together a very strong bid, and won!

The 2011 World Championship is scheduled for Aug. 1-7, 2011 on the Seddon Channel in Downtown Tampa.  The Seddon Channel has been used for many rowing regattas in the years past, including the prestigious University of Tampa President’s Cup.

The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute has been running an annual dragon boat racing in Downtown Tampa since 2004.  They have created one of the most successful dragon boat cities in North America in just a few short years.  All proceeds from the annual event are donated to two charities – The Florida Aquarium and FACTors Breast Cancer Patient Support Program at Moffitt.
